Installation view of Social: Justin Chance & David Sprecher
Koury and FRESH's two-person exhibition immerses itself in small-town anxieties and paranoia. A technologically evolving world in tandem with a 24/7 information cycle and the liquidation of all human social bonds has pushed many people to what seems to be the margins of sanity. Koury and FRESH's work immerses itself in the lives of these individuals with empathy, toeing the line between skepticism and belief. Koury's work tends to look at the VERY alternative wellness community – recreating in sculptural form homemade apparatuses and remedies meant to alleviate psychological and physiological ailments inflicted by 5G towers, the Feds, or GMOS. FRESH's uses found objects, performance, video, and deep field research to create thoughtfully chaotic staged interventions in irl backroads midwestern life. Both Koury and FRESH's practices address a form of marginalization as a result of economic disenfranchisement, the opiate epidemic, a shrinking social safety net, and liberal bourgeois prejudice.
