16mm looping installation
Shot on unsplit 8mm film stock and printed to 16mm to create a tiling effect, this new looping film installation from Chicago-based artist and filmmaker Jiayi Chen presents two views of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara, with one side of the screen occupied by images of a statue found in the artist’s home town of Chongqing and the other side featuring clips from a classic Shaw Brothers’ genre film featuring Avalokiteśvara in earthly form.
Opening September 19, closing October 23.
